FLOCK STEWARDSHIP - HOW IT WORKS

Stewardship is a shared commitment to the daily care and long-term well-being of the flock. Together, Flock Stewards care for the hens and share the eggs they produce.

The Collective will begin with six Steward level memberships. Each Steward serves approximately one one-hour shift per week, where they collect eggs, tidy the coop, feed, water and observe the hens. Stewards also particpate in occasioonal deep cleaning and seasonal coop transition projects.

Flock Stewards are the caretakers of the flock. They are the only members who receive eggs. They work as a team with a cooperative coverage system and support one another during vacations or schedule changes. Because hens thrive on routine and consistency, stewardship is designed as a year-round role.

Flock Steward Responsibilities

  • Share in the daily care of the flock

  • Provide daily care, including feeding, watering, egg collection, and routine health observations

  • Help maintain a clean, healthy environment through coop cleaning and seasonal bedding management

  • Support one another by helping cover vacations and occasional scheduling needs

  • Help build a welcoming community by serving as an ambassador for the Heritage Hen Collective and assisting with occasional educational programs, tours, and special events as you're able.

  • Steward financial contributions represent shared participation in the real costs of humane animal care — including feed, bedding, coop upkeep, and long-term site stewardship.

  • The one-time Onboarding Contribution supports the preparation and integration of new Stewards into the Collective, ensuring that every Steward begins with the knowledge, structure, and systems needed for consistent, high-quality animal care.

Flock Stewards Receive

  • A guaranteed share of the flock's weekly egg production alongside the other Flock Stewards. When eggs are available, each Steward household receives an equal share of the eggs the flock produces.

  • Steward-level access to the coop, with opportunities to spend time with the flock outside of your scheduled care shift during designated visiting hours.

  • Comprehensive onboarding and hands-on training in poultry care, flock management, biosecurity, and sanitation protocols.

  • A deeper connection with the flock through year-round participation in their care, personalities, and daily routines.

  • One complimentary Heritage Hen Collective event each season.

  • Priority access to hen naming opportunities, with exclusive Steward pricing.

  • 20% discount on Heritage Hen Collective ticketed events and programs.

  • Priority registration for limited-capacity events, workshops, and special experiences.

  • Exclusive Steward gatherings and behind-the-scenes opportunities throughout the year.

  • Recognition as a Founding Flock Steward, helping establish and shape the Heritage Hen Collective from its very beginning.

We're currently accepting applications for our inaugural team of Flock Stewards.

Because Flock Stewardship is a shared, year-round commitment, we want to build a team of individuals and families who are a great fit for one another and for the Heritage Hen Collective. Stewardship is more than caring for chickens—it's becoming part of a close-knit community that works together to care for the flock, support one another, and help the Collective grow.

Applications are not considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Instead, we'll take the time to get to know each applicant to ensure the shared stewardship model is a good fit for everyone involved.

Submitting an application simply begins the conversation. There is no obligation, and we'll answer your questions while helping you determine whether Flock Stewardship is the right fit for you and your family.

Stewardship Considerations

  • Our stewardship team consists of six Steward households who care for the flock together.

  • All prospective Stewards complete a simple application so we can get to know one another.

  • Greendale residents receive priority consideration.

  • Stewards make a one-year commitment to help provide consistent care for the flock.

  • Each Steward participates in a weekly care shift and helps with seasonal flock care throughout the year.

  • Stewards receive comprehensive training in best practices for flock care, animal welfare, biosecurity, and stewardship policies and procedures.

  • Stewards should be comfortable working outdoors in all seasons and a variety of weather conditions.

  • Reliability, communication, and a spirit of teamwork help make shared stewardship a success.
